Position Objective

The Bioinformatics Scientist plays a central role in the development of new brewing strains, methods and products for the craft beverage industry. The main task is to expand our NGS and genomic approaches to take advantage of the growing publicly available datasets, and support our in-house sequencing program.

Responsibilities

  • Writes and implements efficient and effective bioinformatics analysis tools, pipelines and software.
  • Develop and maintain tools for the phylogenetic placement/identification of strains from new genomic datasets within existing sequencing data.
  • Develops new methods and algorithms to identify and characterize brewing yeast genomes.
  • Creates and maintains databases for high-throughput sequence analysis.
  • Designs and implements an approach for a comparative analysis of GC-MS datasets.
  • Collaborates effectively with colleagues to provide support and mentoring for bioinformatics projects.
  • Communicates findings to coworkers, customers and beer enthusiasts, including presenting at conferences and/or meetings.
  • Processing and analysis of GC-MS datasets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Interest in craft beer and fermentation.
  • Fluency in relevant programming languages, such as Python, Perl, R, Java, and/or C++.
  • Prior experience with molecular phylogenetics, genome assembly and annotation, variant analysis, and/or GWAS/QTL mapping.
  • Proficiency with statistical analyses such as data clustering and principal component analysis.
  • Understanding and the ability to perform the bench science required to complement bioinformatics projects.
  • Strong critical thinking, experimental design, data mining, interpreting biological significance, troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Resourceful and curious with the knowledge base to propose new project ideas.
  • A well-rounded training in molecular biology and bench science is beneficial.
  • The ability to work independently and be self-driven.
